This is curious indeed. Maybe it has something to do with the packaging it came in? You could try taking it out of that package for a little while and then recheck it. I also wonder if it will smell more like bees wax when you melt it. You could try melting up a little bit and see what that is like as well.
Personally I have not experienced this since I also grate my beeswax from chunks as well. Hopefully someone else has had this experience and therefore maybe some more insight on this.
If you do decide to switch back to grating the beeswax from blocks, I have two little tricks.
1. If you are making bees wax based products often enough, you could get a dedicated grater for that.
2. Boil the kettle and pour this water over the grater. I have found this to be one of the only effective and simple ways to clean beeswax off kitchen tools.
