Hello Sherra,
Chocolate is a food drug both because of the highly processed (sugar-laden) chocolate bars/products available and because of the caffeine content in cocoa. Caffeine in coffee, tea, and chocolate, is one of the most widely consumed and popular drugs that we consume regularly as humans, and processed sugar is as addictive as cocaine.
It’s helpful to remember that cacao in its raw, unprocessed form has incredible health benefits. It’s when you add processed sugar and fats that it becomes more of an addictive substance. Too much of any food/herb/drug is harmful, but in moderation, cacao and cocoa are health promoting in their natural forms.
Let me know if this doesn’t make sense!
Warmth,
Riley
